What is SRT and why is it better than RTMP?
SRT is a technology used to send video from your camera to Twitch, YouTube, Facebook. It's a system that "transports" your video from one point to another. And it's really good at doing that, especially on a mobile connection.
Why is SRT cool?
SRT is cool because it is very good at sending a video that looks great even in "challenging environments". So basically when you have a shitty mobile connection on your IRL stream, SRT is oftentimes still very much capable of sending a video feed to our "ingests".
What is an "ingest"?
An ingest is the server or set of servers that receive the video stream you're sending. It’s like a middleman, making sure the video you send actually gets to the platform (Twitch, YouTube, etc.). With SRT, these ingests are better equipped to handle the messiness of real-world connections, ensuring a smoother, higher-quality stream.
Why is SRT preferred over RTMP?
RTMP has been the standard for streaming for a long time, but it's not great with poor connections or fluctuating internet quality. SRT, on the other hand, uses smart error correction and encryption to keep your video looking sharp, even if you're streaming from anywhere with unstable Wi-Fi or LTE*. Plus, SRT can handle higher-quality video without needing tons of bandwidth, making it perfect for IRL streaming.
So can I use SRT?
Yes! We enable SRT by default (alongside RTMP). All you have to do is send a video from your device to any of our SRT ingests (your server details are in Your Account) and you're good to go.
Is SRT enabled by default?
Yes! If you're using any of our services, SRT is enabled by default. You can dive into your settings to tweak things, but chances are, you're already benefiting from SRT without lifting a finger.
* No matter how great SRT is, you still need a somewhat decent mobile connection to stream. 95% of the connection problems with streaming video from a mobile connection are caused by the mobile connection itself. Do a Speedtest and check your upload speeds, you really need at least a 1Mbit upload speed to stream properly.
